Marvin Khoo

Principal Percussion

Marvin’s involvement with bands started in 1996 when he joined The Saint Patrick’s School Military Band as a clarinettist. During his four years in the band, he performed regularly at concert halls, national parks and shopping malls. In 1999, Marvin led the band as its Drum Major.

Upon completion of his ‘O’ Levels, Marvin continued his education at Geelong Grammar School in Victoria, Australia. For one period everyday, he and a small group on classmates studied the performance and theory of jazz under famed Melbourne pianist / guitarist Paul Rettke.

 

In 2004, Marvin went on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. Whilst there, he studied harmony and composition with Daniel Ian Smith and Greg Hopkins, the later having toured as trumpet player in the Buddy Rich Big Band in the 1970s. With the Drum Set as his principal instrument, Marvin graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Composition) in 2008.

 

Since returning home, Marvin has been an active performer with Singapore’s premier large jazz ensemble, The Summertimes Big Band. He is currently the Director of The Singapore Chinese Girls’ School Band, Saint Andrew’s Junior College Concert Band, and Assistant Director of The Saint Patrick’s School Military Band.
